Advocate Abdur Rob Smrity Summer Open (Rating) Badminton tournament gets underway at the Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur today.
Some 133 shuttlers including 13 women will compete in four events — men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, said organisers at a press conference at the National Sports Council yesterday.
“We have been forced to shift the venue from the newly-built Wooden Floor Gymnasium to Mirpur following disconnection of electricity at the venue,” said Bangladesh Badminton Federation general secretary Mahbubur Rob adding that they did not get any response from the National Sports Council despite repeated appeal to them for the reconnection of electricity.
Tournament committee secretary Hafizur Rahman Milon said the tournament is very important for the players in terms of improving their rankings as the federation always picks the players for the national squad on the basis of players’ ranking.
Tk 1.2 lakh will be distributed among the winners as prize money, sponsors will provide Tk two lakh for the tournament.
