Speakers at a sit-in programme on Saturday urged the government to implement all the projects undertaken by it for the development of greater Khulna as well as the country’s south-western region. Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee organised the programme at the picture palace cinema hall intersection in the city. Chaired by GKDACC president Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, it was addressed, among others, by former GKDACC president Alhaj SM Daud Ali, Dr. Yasin Ali Gazi, Advocate Sheikh Abul Kashem, labour leader Nizamur Rahman Lalu and Khulna City Unit Puja Udjapan Parishad president Shyamal Kumar Halder.
People from all walks of life, including professionals, socio-cultural and human rights activists, teachers and students of different educational institutions, took part in the sit-in programme.
GKDACC has been waging the movement for the last two decades to press home its 18-point demand. The demands include construction of a modern railway station, gas supply through pipeline, construction of Padma
Bridge at Mawa and deep seaport at Akram point, infrastructural development of Mongla port, nationalisation of three high schools, reopening of closed jute mills, construction of Shilpakala Academy Complex, establishment of an agriculture university and construction of an airport.
