As the Awami League-led grand alliance is going to form the next government within nine days, people from all walks of life now want to see the implementation of their commitments included in the election manifesto.
Talking to this correspondent on Wednesday people from different professional bodies including Khondaker Ashraf Hossain, Chairman of English Department of Dhaka University, Economist Abu Ahmed, BGMEA President Anwar ul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, rickshawpuller, grocer, school teacher, banker and government and non-government employees said they want to see decline of the price of essentials and fulfillment of the Awami League-led grand alliance’s commitment included in the election manifesto.
Khondaker Ashraf Hossain said Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will have to learn from the mistakes done during her regime and the regime of Begum Khaleda Zia. “Sheikh Hasina is not an unskilled person as she ruled the country for five years. On the basis of election manifesto, Sheikh Hasina will have to work for the people. Side by side, the leaders of grand alliance will have to show due respect to the opposition views in order to make parliament functional,” he added.
Replying to a query why BNP-led four-party alliance was defeated, English Department Chairman said it was a big protest of the mass people against BNP-led four-party alliance misdeeds.
Economist Abu Ahmed said as Awami League’s election manifesto was very much attractive people cast their vote in favour of the party. “Awami League in its manifesto said it will bring down rice price but it doesn’t have any guideline how and in what way the price of essentials including rice would be reduced. If prices of essentials are reduced drastically, other economic sectors would be affected. So everything should be done carefully,” he added.
BGMEA President said Awami League-led grand alliance will have to form task force soon after the formation of the government to promote the country’s readymade garment sector.
Replying to a query, he said BNP doesn’t have any scope to reject the election as it was held in a free, fair and peaceful manner, rather it should welcome the new government.
“Governments come with many commitments from time to time and go but economic condition of the poor and common people who depend on monthly or daily earnings does not change. But we are not ready to listen to fanciful tales commitments and speeches. We want to see their implementation. We were worried over the holding of parliament election but all confusions and uncertainty have been removed through holding of a free, fair and credible national election,” a group of people from different profession at Nilkhet area in the capital told The Bangladesh Today yesterday.
Talking to this correspondent Mohammad Abdur Razzak, teacher of a Girls High School said the grand alliance will have to remove frustration and uncertainty that gripped the common people due to skyrocketing of prices of essentials, widespread corruption, terrorism and militancy.
“I have watched Sheikh Hasina speaking on the television at a press conference where she promised that her government’s main task is to bring down the price of essentials within the purchasing capacity of the commoners. We are waiting to see what measures are being taken by the new government to redress people’s sufferings. During the rule of BNP-led four-party alliance government and caretaker government, country’s economy has been ruined and now the new government will have to take proper steps to bring the economy on the right track otherwise, people’s sufferings will know no bounds,” they observed
Abul Bashar, a 55-year-old rickshaw-puller told The Bangladesh Today “We don’t understand Hasina and Khaleda. We only know how we can survive,” he said, adding “we want to feed our family members three meals a day.”
