The spectacular photographs portraying different types of butterflies existing in the country is attracting huge response from the audience in an ongoing photography exhibition at Drik Gallery in Dhanmondi.
Eight environmentalist photographers are displaying 82 eye-catching photographs of around 64 species of butterflies in the group exhibition titled Chobi Dekhe Shekha: Butterflies of Bangladesh. The photographs taken in eight different districts of Bangladesh illustrate the minute differences between the butterfly species that is not easily noticeable by an inexperienced eye.
For that reason, the group of environmentalists led by Mirza Shamim Ahsan Habib has provided the necessary scientific information, like the taxonomy of butterflies, in a book with the same title as the exhibition.
The work, therefore, becomes a work of science with aesthetic value. The colourful little flies on different colourful flowers, tree twigs and leaves are a feast for the urban eyes. As the concrete city does not give visitors the opportunity to see butterflies alive roaming around, the exhibition has attracted many visitors.
The team behind the exhibition comprises of Mirza Shamim Ahasan Habib, Md Shahtabul Islam, Avra Bhattacharjee, Kazi Farhed Iqubal, Md Monowar Mahmud Jewel, Sikder Nizamul Haque, Saifuddin Saif and Maruful Alam Chowdhury.
The eight districts covered by the team are Gazipur, Narsingdi, Comilla, Manikganj, Kishoreganj, Narayangaj, Panchagar and Bandarban.
‘Our aim is to cover all the sixty-four districts of Bangladesh and find how many species still exist. It, I hope, will help us in many ways,’ said the team leader Mirza Shamim Ahsan Habib.
‘It is a wonderful exhibition. All the photographs are very enjoyable,’ said Alim Hasan, a visitor at the photo exhibition.
‘Butterfly of Bangladesh team has done an important job. I thank them and hope they will continue their effort in collecting the information,’ said Shahid Reza, another visitor.
To note, a similar exhibition was organised by the same group back in 2011 where the project covered eight districts and 61 species of butterfly were found then.
The present exhibition was inaugurated on November 08 by Mr Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmed, Country Representative of International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The exhibition will remain open for all from 3pm to 8pm till November 14.
