The country’s point-to-point inflation in July declined slightly to 7.78 per cent from 7.97 per cent in June due to decline in both food and non-food inflation.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics data released on Wednesday showed that food inflation declined to 8.48 per cent in July from 8.53 per cent in June.
Non-food inflation also came down to 6.58 per cent in July from 6.99 per cent in the previous month as per the inflation calculation based on the base-year of 1995–1996.
As per the base year of 2005–2006, the country’s point-to-point inflation also declined to 7.85 per cent in July from 8.05 per cent in June, the data showed.
Rural and urban inflation indicators also showed downtrend.
However, on a monthly basis, inflation increased by 0.94 percentage point in July compared to the previous month mostly because of price hike of food and non-food items.
In July, food inflation rose to 2.16 per cent from 0.92 per cent in June while non-food inflation increased to 0.51 per cent from 0.19 per cent.
‘Food prices especially of rice, flour, vegetables, fish, fruits, spices and milk increased in July compared with that of June,’ BBS director general Golam Mostafa Kamal told journalists while releasing the inflation data on the day.
‘Prices of non-food items like house rent, clothes, furniture, transport and stationary cost also rose in July than June 2013,’ he said.
Kamal also said inflation was calculated on the basis of 318 products from rural and 422 items from the urban areas.
