A milad mahfil of Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) seeking early recovery of ailing BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was foiled in the city on Tuesday due to police obstruction. Leaders and activists of Jasas, the cultural wing of the main opposition party, thronged BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the morning as the programme was scheduled to be held at 11am.
At one stage, law enforcers obstructed the Jasas men saying they cannot hold the programme as it may lead to chaos and violence.
Intercepted, the Jasas men moved to Bashani Bhaban, opposite to the BNP office, only to be prevented by police again from holding the milad mahfil.
BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman was scheduled to address the programme as the chief guest.
Meanwhile, BNP spokesman Shamsuzzaman Dudu at a press briefing at the party’s central office in the afternoon condemned the police obstruction and alleged the law enforcers unlawfully foiled their milad mahfil threatening to arrest the Jasas leaders and activists.
Earlier on Sunday, Home Minister Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir said some political parties have caused a law and order problem in the name of holding their programmes. “Hence, no one would be allowed to hold any kind of rally for the next one month.”
On May 14, Fakhrul went to Singapore and has been undergoing treatment at National University Hospital there.
On Monday, Dhaka city unit BNP and Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal also held two separate milad mahfils at Bhashani auditorium seeking early recovery the BNP acting secretary general.
