Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Saturday expressed his grave concern over the growing political instability across the country. Terming the ongoing political unrest a major obstacle on the way to investment, the governor underscored the need for a stable socio-political situation to ensure a conducive environment for investment. The governor was speaking a scholarship awarding ceremony at the city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on Saturday. Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited (SJIBL) organised the programme where some 500 students from various colleges and universities were awarded scholarship for their outstanding results.
Each of students received Tk 15,000 for excellent results in SSC level and
Tk 20,000 in HSC level.
Dwelling on the banks CSR activities, the bank’s chairman AK Azad said that it (the bank) had been playing a remarkable role in improving the economic conditions of the country’s marginal people through various CSR programmes.
The central bank governor also mentioned that expenditures in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities undertaken by banks and non-banks financial institutions were increased six folds during the last five years.
In last five fiscal years, the banks, financial and non-bank financial institutions spent Tk 30.05 million in conducting different CSR activities, he added.
The contribution of CSR activities to the growth of financial inclusion has strengthened and balanced the country’s overall micro-economy, he
pointed out.
In recent times, inflation came down to 7.03 per cent, forex reserve roared to US$ 17.6 billion and per capita income reached $ 1044, the governor said adding that the country’s balance of payments was also in a very stable position
right now.
Appreciating Shahjalal Islami Bank authorities for continuing aid and financial supports to the under privileged as part of its CSR activities, he said that it was a kind of patriotism to help the lower tier family in the country. “It is very necessary to participate in the poverty alleviation program,” he added.
The BB governor also mentioned that all banks and non-banks financial organisation donated Tk 10 million to prime minister’s relief fund after the tragic incident of Rana Plaza for rehabilitation of the victim and his/her families.
“We experienced an exemplary note of humanity after the collapsed of Rana Plaza as thousands of volunteers and financial institutions directly or indirectly took part in rescuing the victims.”
“The poor but brilliants can be turned into valuable assets in our country if they are given proper care and financial
support,” said the bank’s chairman AK Azad adding that the Shahjalal Islami Bank will always be with these brilliant students.
