BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Thursday called upon the ruling Awami League to hold the next general election under the supervision of a non-party government through a consensus. “Let us hold the election under a non-party and impartial government through consensus. It will be praise-worthy,” he said while taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget in Parliament. But the BNP leader made it clear that the opposition would not take part in any election under a political government.
He warned that the incumbent government will be worst victim if 1/11 like situation recurs in the country. The former minister said his party will not place any proposal in the House on election-time government.
“It is the responsibility of the ruling party to bring amendment to the constitution for restoration of non-party caretaker government as they have created the problem by cancelling the caretaker government system…The structure of the caretaker government can remain unchanged. Discussion can be held as to who will be the chief of the election time government,” he explained.
The BNP leader said the ruling party doesn’t want to hold the election under a non-party government as their only target is to go to power again.
He recalled the past instance that AL chief Sheikh Hasina, now the prime minister, wrote to then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia the same demand for talks on caretaker government.
Moudud said the AL had introduced vote rigging in the country during the first election in 1973.
Accusing the AL of destroying democracy in the country, he said the BNP and President Ziaur Rahman can claim as the pro-liberation force since Zia had introduced multi-party democracy and freedom of judiciary and press.
He said the biggest failure of the AL-led government is its inability to establish good governance.
