The first day of Bangla New Year 1420 was celebrated in different parts of Chittagong amid traditional fanfare and festivities.
The programme at Nazrul Square of DC Hill organised by Sammilita Pahela Baishakh Udjapon Parishad began at 6:15am on Sunday with a raga song.
On the same day, in CRB, the Baishakh special show commenced with playing of sitar by a cultural organisation Krishti at 7:00am. Thousandsof people wearing traditional attires thronged the area.
A wrestling competition was also held at CRB area like every year. This year Didar Bali from Teknaf clinched the championship, defeating Shamshu Bali of Ukhiya area. A total of 67 wrestlers took part in the competition.
Chittagong City Corporation chalked out an elaborate programme to celebrate Pahela Baishakh. The three-day long programme featured discussion sessions, colourful procession, wrestling competition, cultural show etc. Port city’s mayor M Manjur Alam formally inaugurated the programme.
Bangla Barsha Biday O Baran Sammilan Parishad arranged a Baishakh programme at Bangladesh Women Association School in the city. This year the programme was dedicated to the recently deceased scientist Professor Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam.
Chittagong Press Club organised a day-long programme to celebrate the occasion. The club also organised a reception ceremony for poets and journalists.
Charushilpi Sammilan and Institute of Fine Arts, Chittagong University jointly brought out a Mangal Shobhajatra titled ‘Collaborator-free Bangladesh’.
