Frequent load shedding, accompanied with extreme heat, is plaguing life at different parts of Rajshahi city as well as the whole district for past two or three days.
The authorities, however, said they were not getting enough supply from national grid, so the Rajshahi people would have to suffer for few more days.The city dwellers are suffering much at night due to frequent power outages and load-shedding.
They have complained that they cannot sleep sound at night because of load shedding for three to four times.
Moli Rahman, housewife of Ghoramara area in the city, said Sunday night there was no electricity during her cooking and taking dinner.
Rajshahi College student Mortuza Ali, who resides at SS Plaza at Shaheb Bazar in Rajshahi, told New Age that electricity was off three times early Monday and he could not sleep last night owing to power outages.
Because of the power cuts, the industrial units are also experiencing setbacks.
Traders and shopkeepers said they could not afford to use generators since the price of diesel and petrol had also gone up tremendously.
Rumel Hossain, proprietor of Karim and Sons, a multi-storage shop at Shaheb Bazar, told New Age that because of the power outages, they were compelled to stop selling during the peak hour in the evening on Sunday.
Rajshahi University mass communication and journalism associate professor Mustak Ahmed told New Age, ‘In the last few days we spent at least six hours without electricity. My research activities are being severely affected as a result.’
Kaniz Fatema, student of law and justice at Rajshahi University, who resides Monnujan Hall, said frequent load-shedding was interrupting their preparations for the upcoming fourth year examinations.
Zamat Khain, general secretary of Rajshahi Rakkhah Sangram Parishad, a pressure group, told New Age that several times the power authorities assured the people of ensuring interrupted supply of electricity.
‘Tough movement would be taken against the authorities concerned if they fail to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity,’ he added.
Sources in Rajshahi Power Development Board said they were getting only 70 per cent of the demand for power.
Swapon Kumar Ray, chief engineer of Rajshahi Power Development Board, told New Age that the main power grid was supplying 60-70MW power against the demand for 95MW every day.
