The Premier Hockey League will get underway today after a long 27-month gap with reigning champions Abahani Limited taking on Bangladesh Railway in the opening match at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium. A total of 12 teams will participate in the 11th edition of the league while the 10th edition was staged way back in February 2014. Four clubs — Mohammedan SC, Mariners Young’s Club, Wari Club and Bangladesh Sporting Club –boycotted the last edition’s league as they denied to participate in any hockey related activities under former general secretary Khaja Rahamatullah.
Club Cup Hockey champions Abahani and runners-up Usha Krira Chakra, who finished as joint champions in 2014 edition, will face tough challenges this time from Mohammedan SC and Mariner Young’s Club.
The Premier Hockey League, however, was never held on regular basis since its introduction in 1998.
