The prices of local onion and broiler increased on the retail markets in the city over the week ending Friday due to a supply shortage. Rice prices remained high over the week.
The price of local onion increased by Tk 5 a kilogram and it was selling at Tk 65 a kg on Friday. A section of retailers at some kitchen markets including Banasree and Hatirpool in the city, however, were selling the item at Tk 80 a kg on the day.
The price of imported onion remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 40 a kg on Friday.
Habibur Rahman, a retailer at the Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that the price of local onion increased a bit as the supply of the item dropped in the last few days due to blockade called by the opposition political alliance.
He alleged that wholesalers were also manipulating the price of local onion by hoarding imported onion.
If smooth transportation of the item can be ensured, the price of local onion will come down below Tk 40 a kg within a week, he said.
The price of broiler increased by Tk 10 a kg and it was selling at Tk 140-Tk 150 a kg on Friday.
The coarse and fine varieties of BR-28 and miniket were selling at Tk 43-Tk 45 a kg and Tk 48-Tk 52 a kg respectively while fine varieties of najishail was retailing at Tk 54-Tk 60 a kg over the week.
The prices of vegetables remained unchanged.
Bean was retailing at Tk 20-Tk 30 a kg, cauliflower at Tk 25 a piece, cabbage at Tk 25 a piece, aubergine at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 30 a kg, cucumber at Tk 30 a kg, carrot at Tk 30 a kg, tomato at Tk 30 a kg and papaya at Tk 15 a kg on the day.
The price of egg remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 26-Tk 28 a hali (four pieces) on Friday.
Green chilli price dropped by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg on Friday.
Potato price decreased by Tk 2 a kg and it was retailing at Tk 18 a kg. Sugar was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg.
The price of local red lentil remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 115 a kg on Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) increased by Tk 5 and it was selling at Tk 575-Tk 585 in the city’s kitchen markets. The unpacked soya bean oil was retailing at Tk 112-Tk 115 a kg.
Fish prices remained almost unchanged over the week.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250–Tk 300 a kg on Friday, pangas at Tk 180–Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 160–Tk 200 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The prices of beef and mutton remained steady. Beef was selling at Tk 280 a kg and mutton at Tk 450 a kg on Friday.
