Teachers, students demand punishment of the killer
The prime suspect in the killing of Sylhet Government Women’s College teacher was arrested in a Sunamganj village early Wednesday, eight months after the killing.
The arrested Abdul Latif alias Kawsar, 28, an expatriate in the United Kingdom, was sent to the RAB headquarters in Dhaka by air at noon.
A team of the Rapid Action Battalion-9 arrested Kawsar at Chilakandi, a frontier village under Bishwambharpur upazila, at about 4:30am, RAB sources said.
His father Abdul Khalique is a former chairman of the Jauya union council under Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj.
Harun-ur-Rashid, associate professor and chairman of the philosophy department of the college, was stabbed in front of his Chowhatta residence in the city on March 21 when he was returning home from the college and died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital about one hour after the attack.
RAB sources said Kawsar was taken to the RAB-9 headquarters at Islampur in the Sylhet city after they arrested him and decided to hold a news briefing in this regard at 11:00am.
But, the briefing was cancelled and he was flown to the RAB headquarters in Dhaka at noon for further interrogation, following a directive given by the higher authorities concerned, the sources said.
Deputy director of RAB-9 major Taufique Elahee told the journalists that they were confirmed about Kawsar’s involvement in the killing from the statements given by his two associates and two students of the college.
Meanwhile, students and teachers of Sylhet Government Women’s College have demanded punishment of the killers of their teacher Harun-ur-Rashid.
They pressed home their demand at a rally on the college campus Wednesday afternoon, following the arrest of the prime suspect in the murder Abdul Latif alias Kawsar early Wednesday.
The college principal Nazrul Haque Chowdhury presided over the meeting while Sylhet Murari Chand College teachers Anwar Hossain Chowdhury and ANM Riaz, SGWC teachers Abdul Mujib, Debashish Devnath, Shamim Khan and Mayeen Uddin, among others, addressed the meeting.
