Students of twenty-five schools and human rights activists formed a human chain and held a rally on Sunday, protesting against the killing of a schoolgirl.
The programme was organised by Bangladesh Shikkhak Samity, Barisal regional branch.
The rally was held in front of Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall, which was presided over by Dash Gupta Ashish Kumar, regional president of the organisation.
The speakers said Rumman, a student of Barisal Government BM College used to tease Mariam Aktar Swarna, a Class X student of the Sagordi Union Secondary School for long.
Among others, Nurjahan Begum, secretary of Mahila Parishad district unit, Faridul Alam Jahangir, regional leader of Shikkhak Samity, Shahidul Islam, father of the victim, Professor M Moazzem Hossain, AK Azad, Akkas Hossain, Habibur Rahman, a human rights activist, addressed the programme.
Swarna refused the love proposal and out of rage Rumman and his associates hacked Swarna on August 7 while she was on her way to tuition.
The victim’s father Shahidul Islam lodged a case with Kotwali police station accusing five.
But till now Rumman was not arrested due to authority’s negligence, alleged the speakers.
The participants of the programme demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers along with proper treatment and rehabilitation of the victim.
Police arrested Rumman’s mother Runa Begum and his uncle Kamal Hossain in this connection, investigation officer of the case subinspector Sumon Haldar said.
‘We are trying to arrest the main accused Rumman,’ he added.
