Sachetan Sylhetbasi, a social forum of the Sylhet people, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology vice-chancellor in protest at the authorities’ move to allow those students, who would be successful in the intake test to be held at Jessore University of Science and Technology, to get admitted at SUST.The SUST and JUST authorities this year signed an agreement to hold the admission tests at both of university campuses on the same day on November 30 with a same question paper, sources in the SUST administration said.
According to the agreement, the candidates who would come out successful in the tests will have the option to choose any of the two campuses to study, the sources said.
Sachetan Sylhetbasi in the memorandum demanded cancellation of the option that allows successful candidate of JUST to get admitted at SUST.
They claimed that the students, who would sit the intake test at SUST, would have to go through a tough contest than those who would sit the test on JUST campus.
They said the students of the Sylhet region would not be interested to get admission at JUST while students of the Jessore region would prefer to get
admitted at SUST because of its quality and it would put an extra pressure on the students of the Sylhet region.
The forum adviser Iliasur Rahman, also a Sylhet City Corporation councillor, its joint-convener Kaysar Rashid Chowdhury and Zahed Ahmed Talukdar, member secretary Abdul Mukith, joint-member secretary Afsar Khan, member Omar Mahmud, Ali Akbar Rajan, Rashed Ahmed, Mahmudul Hasan Fahad and Zabed Hasan were present while the memorandum was handed over to the SUST vice-chancellor.
Being contacted, SUST admission committee convener Zakir Hossain said the decision of holding admission tests at the two public universities was taken in a meeting of the Association of Universities held in Dhaka.
‘It would not be possible to say right now where the effort would put any adverse impact on the students of the Sylhet region,’ he said.
