Artist Nasima Khanam Queenie is displaying 31 prints in her first ever printmaking solo exhibition titled Return to Eden at the
Alliance Francaise de Dhaka.
In the sixth solo of the romantic artist, Queenie depicts the harmonious relation between man and nature.
All the 31 prints depict the Eden-like ambiance where figures of men and women come not simply to resemble the flora and fauna, but also to suggest the unity of all forms of life.
Some of the prints are from a single plate but in different colours.
The interesting thing in Queenie’s depiction of Eden is that it has a reflection of the age-old rural Bangladesh.
Queenie prints some content men and women, in her prints 01, 03 and 12, in an orgy with the nature. There are figures playing Bangla dhol, rivers flowing by, and boats anchored nearby. Thereby, Queenie’s Eden does not give off the impression of any Christian or Muslim Eden, but the past and lost beauty of Bangladesh where the virgin nature coexists with pure humans.
There are other eye-catching works where love-laden couples are basking under the moon such as in Return to Eden 14.
‘All the works here are manifestations of, say, a dream or imagination. The dream gets me to a whole world away, a whole different destination,’ said Nasima Khanam Queenie.
‘Nasima has not only tried to avoid using technical complexities and excessive tools, but she also has chosen the simple life style as her subject, away from the critical materialistic world,’ observes artist Nissar Hossain.
The exhibition was inaugurated on December 13 by prominent artist Rafiqun Nabi and will be open till December 27.
