The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two persons with a large quantity of illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment from a house in the Rayer Bazar area of the city on Tuesday night. They were identified as Mohammad Firoz Alam (25) and Sohel Rana (22). RAB director (legal and media wing) Habibur Rahman told The Independent: “A team of RAB-2, acting on a tip-off, raided the seventh floor of a seven-storey building at Jafarabad in the Rayer Bazar area around 11:30pm on Tuesday. The team seized VoIP equipment worth about Tk. 50 lakh. The team also seized 14 channel banks of different ports, two CPUs, two monitors, 132 antennas, 2,772 pieces of mobile phone SIM cards and other VoIP- related equipment. Two people were arrested on charges of possessing illegal VoIP equipment.”
On December 22, a team of RAB-1 had raided a six-storey building at Uttara Sector-12 and arrested 43 people, including 37 foreigners, on the charge of running an illegal business of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Of the foreigners, five are from China and 32 from Taiwan. The team had also seized a large quantity of illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment from the building.
RAB-1 commanding officer Lt. Col. Kismat Hayat told The Independent: “We interrogated those arrested through an interpreter on Monday night. They admitted that they were involved in the VoIP business in Sri Lanka and were arrested there and sentenced to different jail terms.”
