Discussants in a programme in Sylhet on Thursday urged the public and private investment organisations to promote rainwater harvesting to minimise
the country’s excessive dependence on underground water.
Mentioning that the level of underground water is going down three metres ever year in the country because of excessive use, they said such tremendous dependence on ground water could be reduced by installing adequate number of rainwater harvesting plants.
They also suggested setting up rainwater harvesting plants in all the densely populated areas, including the tea gardens of Sylhet.
They were addressing a discussion programme styled ‘Rain water harvesting: an alternative way to save ground water extraction’ held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology auditorium at noon to mark the inauguration of the rainwater harvesting plant on the university campus.
SUST civil and
environmental department in association with WaterAid and IDEA installed a rainwater harvesting
plant with a capacity of 10,000 litre water on the campus.
SUST acting vice-chancellor Elias Uddin Biswas addressed the programme as chief guest, with CEE chief Zahir Bin Alam in the chair.
WaterAid Bangladesh programme manager Shamim Ahmed and IDEA assistant director Nazim Ahmed, among others, addressed the discussion.
