Three mayoral candidates for the Rajshahi City Corporation poll — AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul and Habibur Rahman — have said that they would build a corruption, terrorism, drug menace and political vengeance-free peaceful, planned, clean Rajshahi city if they were given the chance to serve the city people. They were attending a “Face to Face with the People” programme, jointly organised by SUJON,The Independent’s Rajshahi Bureau, Lokomorcha and the Bangladesh Livestock Society at the Safa Wang Community Centre in Rajshahi.
Presided over by Professor Dr Jalal Uddin DVM, president of the Bangladesh Livestock Society, the programme was conducted by Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, central secretary of Shushasoner Jonno Nagorik-SUJON. It was attended by Mozammel Haque, executive member of Lokomorcha, Rajshahi, Dr Hedayetul Islam, Dilip Kumar Sarker, central co-ordinator of SUJON, Subrata Kumar Paul and Sarker Shariful Islam of The Independent’s Rajshahi Bureau and others.
Independent mayoral candidate Habibur Rahman, contesting with the “spectacles” symbol, said that if elected, he would strive to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the city people. He also pledged to build a terrorism and corruption free Rajshahi without increasing holding taxes, ensuring accountability of all work and remain above political vengeance. He also gave the assurance that he would develop the lot of the deprived and poverty-stricken people.
AHM Khairuzzaman of the Nagorik Committee, contesting with the “lock” symbol, pledged to build a special industrial zone in Rajshahi to ensure jobs for unemployed youths. He said people of Rajshahi city were already getting piped gas. So far, Tk. 350 crore have been spent on development work during his tenure as mayor. He said he would complete all unfinished projects started by him. He pledged to build a peaceful, clean and environment- friendly city.
On the other hand, Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul, Sammilito Nagorik Forum’s mayoral candidate contesting with the “pineapple” symbol, pledged to the city people to build an IT city and agro-based industries in Rajshahi to provide jobs for young people. He promised to set up an agriculture university and BKSP, projects for freedom fighters in Rajshahi and build a corruption and terrorism-free society.
At the end of the programme, the three mayoral candidates answered questions from common people and voters.
