The Rajshahi University authorities are going to provide internet connection to sixteen residential halls of the university so that the students can use the technology to further their academic activities.
The authorities are also going to provide Radio Frequency Identity Card for all teachers, students and employees of the university.
They will also implement a special project with the financial support of the World Bank and technical support of the University Grants Commission in this respect, the university sources said.
RU computer centre administrator and also manager of the project Professor Mamunur Rashid Talukder told New Age that the authorities were expecting that the project would start in the beginning of 2011 as the University Grants Commission took the project positively.
He informed that the computer centre had also taken an initiative to prepare a database of all essential information related to the university.
The centre will provide a form for collecting essential information from teachers, students, employees and departments, he added.
Under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project, to be implemented through Extension Renovation of Network and Building Automated Office Management System, every teacher, students and employees of the university will get RFID and personal internet browsing facilities.
Earlier, the University Grants Commission invited proposal from the public universities of the country on June of this year for Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project of the World Bank to improve quality education and research activities.
After getting the letter from the UGC, the university authorities held several meetings in this regard and on July 27 sent proposals to implement ‘Extension Renovation of Network and Building Automated Office Management System’ project.
If the project is implemented, every residential student of the university will get internet connection through wireless system, the authorities hoped.
The teachers, students and employees will get facilities of university medical centre, bank, central library and hall offices using the RFID card.
Talking to New Age, the director of planning and development section of the university, Lutfor Rahman, said the authorities had sent a total of 45 project proposals on research and infrastructure development with an estimated budget of Tk 25 crore under the Higher Education Quality Enhance Project of the World Bank to improve quality education and research activities.
HEQEP project director of UGC Korban Ali told New Age over mobile phone that the authorities have been scrutinising the proposals from the public universities.
He also expected that the qualified projects will get approval this month.
