Launches drive on Oct 11 to ease traffic jam
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha will launch a drive soon to remove illegal structures from the parking spaces at 198 buildings aiming to ease traffic congestion in the city.
‘We will launch the drive on October 11 as the owners of those buildings occupy the roads for car parking while using their own parking spaces for other purposes,’ director (development control) of Rajuk Sheikh Abdul Mannan told New Age on Thursday.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has requested them to conduct the drive after they identified the buildings as part of their plan to reduce traffic congestion in the capital, he said.
Traffic Department held 344 buildings responsible for traffic congestion as their vehicles are parked on the roads.
Of these buildings, 198 park vehicles on roads despite having their own parking spaces, he added, saying that these parking places are being used for other purposes while the remaining 146 buildings do not have parking facilities at all.
‘We will carry out the drive in line with Building Constructions Rules 1952 and owners of respective buildings will have to bear the cost to be spent for conducting the drive.’
He said they had already sent letters to the owners of these buildings, asking them to clear their car parks within next seven days, otherwise they would take action.
The buildings are mostly situated on roads in Hatkhola, Tikatuli, Motijheel, Fakirerpool, Gulistan, Islampur, Sadarghat, Siddheshwari, Golapbagh, Kamalapur, Khilgaon, Malibagh, Rampura, Shahjadpur, Badda, Gulshan, Banani, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Mirpur, Shewrapara, Elephant Road, New Market, Kalabagan, Satmasjid Road and Uttara.
A total of 32 buildings had been identified in Motijheel and Dilkusha. Headquarters of Bangladesh Bank, Sonali Bank, Dhaka Bank and Uttara Bank, Pubali Bank and City Bank in Motijheel and Dilkusha, Ittefaq Bhaban and Inqilab Bhaban on RK Mission Road also are on the list.
Most of other buildings are markets, shopping malls, garment factories, hospitals, diagnostic centres and educational institutions situated on city’s main roads.
Besides, 28 buildings are in Sabujbagh, Malibagh, Khilgaon and Rampura areas while 20 buildings including Almas Tower, Rabiul Plaza, Mukta Bangla Shopping Complex, Hatil Furniture Showroom, Upama Plaza and Mirpur Diagnostic Centre in Mirpur and Pallabi, 12 buildings on Elephant Road, 16 buildings including New Market on Mirpur Road, two buildings on Panthapath, seven buildings including Xiaxin Chinese and Star Kabab on Satmasjid Road, 13 buildings including Columbia Supermarket, Square Centre and Siddique Tower in Mohakhali-Gulshan area, nine buildings in Tejgaon industrial area, 10 buildings in Banani, 16 buildings in Badda and Shahjadpur areas and 19 buildings in Uttara.
Apart from these, many buildings in Gulistan, Sadarghat and Islampur had been identified and its parking spaces would be cleared aiming to ease city’s nagging traffic jam.
