Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha expects to build in five years, beginning June, 22,000 apartments of three sizes at Uttara for mid income people, said officials.
The 214-acre project, in the 2,100-acre third phase of Uttara Model Town, has been planned to meet the growing housing needs in the capital, they said.
Rajuk allotted 9,045 plots in under development 2,100-acre third phase, 8,295 residential, 550 commercial and around 200 institutional.
Rajuk planned the phase to accommodate five lakh people, with a per acre density of 240 persons.
Rajuk project director for the model town’s third phase, Nurul Islam, said it would take at least two months to begin the construction of the apartments.
The Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina is expected to lay the corner stone of the apartment project on April 21, Rajuk chairman Nurul Huda told New Age.
After the appointment of consultants to sketch out the project, Rajuk would float tenders for the construction work, he said.
Rajuk expects to start scouting for the consultants soon, they said.
The project director said, ‘We expect to start the construction in June.’
‘A Tk 8,000 crore development project, to be funded by Rajuk, awaits the cabinet approval,’ he said.
Rajuk, he said, set aside 10 acres, close to the apartment project, for building flats exclusively for the ultra poor.
The city development authority is looking for donor support to build the apartments for the ultra poor, he said.
Besides, it earmarked another 10.97 acres for building flats for government officials, he said.
In the model tow, he said, Rajuk wants to create a 17-acre open space for recreation use by the residents and an 18.5- acre commercial zone.
In 1966, Rajuk, then called Dhaka Improvement Trust, took the project to create the Uttara satellite town on 2,008 acres of land. Its area was expanded from time to time.
The Uttara Model Town project was completed in 1992.
In first phase, Rajuk allotted 6,000 plots of different sizes on 950 acres of land. Starting in 1992 it completed the model town expansion in 1998 in the second phase.
In the second phase, Rajuk acquired 438 acres of land and allotted 5,315 plots to the buyers.
