The Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists on Tuesday formed a human chain and held a rally protesting at the suspension of operation of private television channels Diganta TV and Islamic TV.
The programmes were held on Nur Ahmmed Road before the CMUJ office in the morning.
Expressing solidarity with the human chain, BNP city unit president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government suspended the operations of the two private channels bypassing the law.
‘The government also closed private channel Channel 1 and vernacular Bangla daily Amar Desh in the same fashion. This sort of crackdown cannot take place in a civilised country,’ added Khosru.
Presided over by BFUJ (a faction) vice-president Iskander Ali, the rally was addressed by journalist Mustafa Nayeem, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, MP, general secretary of Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury, daily Amar Desh Chittagong bureau chief Jahidul Karim Kochi, daily Nayadiganta bureau chief Helal Humayun, Diganta TV bureau chief Golam Maula Murad, Islamic TV bureau chief Shahidul Islam, journalist Saleh Noman and TV Camera Journalist Association general secretary Farid Uddin.
