NAT’L ART BIENNALE
Rasel Kanti Das wins AB Bank Award
Artist Rasel Kanti Das won the AB Bank Award for his mixed media painting Situation-8 in the ongoing 20th National Art Biennale organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at the
National Art Gallery of the academy.
The winning entry is the eighth painting of a series titled Situation by Rasel Das. It depicts several human heads sticking out from the drawers of a wardrobe. The faces bear negative expressions generating from anguish, disturbance, panic, exhaustion, anger and agony. The drawers that force the faces to be crunched and crumbled up are emblematic of hurdles that people are compelled to face everyday.
‘This is the actual situation in reality. We all are caught in the same dangerous and dark situation at a restless time’, the artist shares with New Age.
‘Ours is a time which is much afflicted by the misdeeds of a few but very powerful people. As a result, the majority of people are trapped in a situation from there where there seems to be no way out’, the artist further added.
Other works of the series also reflect the artist’s thought process and grasp over human situation in the contemporary world. There is another work Situation-15 by Rasel at the exhibition.
On winning the award, Rasel says, ‘It is a big recognition for me, and will spur my works’.
