The Rajshahi City Corporation on Thursday announced a budget of Tk 1,007 crore for the 2022–2023 financial year.
RCC mayor and Awami League presidium AHM Khairuzzaman Liton announced the budget at a press conference at the Nagar Bhaban at 2:30pm.
He also announced a revised budget of Tk 796.02 crore for the outgoing 2021–22 financial year — Tk 284 crore down from the initially announced budget of Tk 1,080 crore. The budget implementation rate in the outgoing fiscal was 71 per cent.
The mayor said that no new tax was imposed on the city dwellers in the budget while about Tk 800 crore of the budget would be spent on different development projects.
Khairuzzaman Liton said that special importance was given to cleanliness and greening programmes, the development of roads and waste management, removing traffic congestion, improvement of education quality, building recreational spots for city dwellers and adaptation programmes for climate change.
He said that the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation Industrial City-2 project was in the final stage of implementation at a cost of Tk 172 crore on 50 acres of land in Kechuatail village under Parila union of Paba upazila where employment for 10,000 people would be created while 14,000 youths would get jobs at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib High Tech Park.
The mayor said that initiatives had been taken to set up a centre for the rehabilitation of paralysed people where 5,000 people would receive treatment for stroke and other physical disabilities.
Khairuzzaman also said that they would also build houses on khas land on its own fund and hand over them to 100 landless and homeless families.
He said that a provision to obtain permission from the city corporation before constructing any building in the metropolis would be imposed in the proposed budget and the developers would have to pay construction tax on multi-storey buildings.
The city mayor said that they had launched a website named Smart Rajshahi and a mobile application where the city tenants would be able to get a total of 24 services online.
