Sonali Bank burglary
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), on Wednesday, handed over the prime suspects in the Kishoreganj bank robbery case—Habibur Rahman alias Sohel Rana and Motahar Hoissain alias Idris Ali—to the investigation officer of Kishoreganj Sadar police station.
The RAB also recovered Tk. 16.19 crore and handed it over to the Sonali Bank authorities on Wednesday morning.
In a daring robbery, a gang of robbers dug a tunnel to the bank’s vault on Isa Khan Road of Rathkhola area in Kishoreganj, and looted Tk. 16.40 crore during the two-day bank holidays on Friday and Saturday.
On Monday afternoon, deputy general manager (DGM) Sheikh Amanullah lodged a case with the police. The Kishoreganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Abdul Malek was assigned with the investigation in the case.
Maj. Tafiqul Bari, of RAB-10, who led the operation and arrested two suspected robbers, told The Independent, “The OC of Kishoreganj Sadar police station inspector, Abdul Malek, took custody of the arrested from the RAB headquarters around 1:15am on Wednesday, according to court order and brought them to Kishoreganj.”
“Acting manager of the Kishoreganj Sonali Bank’s Rathkhola Branch reached the RAB headquarters around 6am, and the RAB officials handed over the recovered amount around 7:15am on Wednesday,” Maj. Bari, said adding that the RAB will continue drives to arrest the father-in-law of Siraj, alias Foreman Siraj, who was the burglary mastermind.
During interrogation, the main suspect has revealed that a bank official was involved in the robbery, said RAB’s additional deputy director Col Ziaul Hasan.
As many as 17 people, including 12 Sonali Bank officials, were interrogated in the Sadar police station on Monday. Law enforcers also detained branch manager Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, and five others, early on Monday, for interrogation.
Sonali Bank’s main branch at Kishoreganj Sadar began functioning normally on Wednesday.
