Two groups of BNP grassroot leaders and activists were locked in scuffles and chase and counter chase at Mowlana Bhasani party office at Nayapaltan on Monday.
As part of party reconstitution process, Ahmed Khalil Khan, president of Chandanaish thana BNP at Chittagong south and his supporters came to the central leaders for exchanging views and opinions. At that time, a group of activists led by MA Hashem Raju, former student leader and expelled member secretary of Chandanaish thana BNP harassed Khalil Khan and acting assistant secretary Sheikh Mohammad Mohiuddin.
BNP Joint Secretary General Gayeshwar Chandra Roy who was assigned for Chittagong division admitted the fact and said, “It is unexpected as we are giving opportunity to all for expressing their opinions. As local committees are not formed through council, there are many committees at every thana. It is an internal feud not anything else.”
BNP Joint Secretary General Mirza Abbas said that it is true that council was not held for last 15 years and lots of organizational weaknesses exist among grassroots. It was not the only reason for the defeat of BNP in the national election. “BNP is not such an unpopular political party which can be defeated devastatingly. We were defeated due to conspiracy of the government,” Abbas said.
He said that the leaders who wanted to form another party eliminating BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia when she was in jail, there is no way for them to return to the party. “Because, a betrayer is always a betrayer. Those had allied themselves with the caretaker government will have to be identified,” he added.
Replying to a query about the clash between two groups of BNP grassroot leaders Abbas said, “The leaders and activists who actually love BNP do not take reformists easily.”
Kazi Motahar Hossain, president, Charvadration upzilla and M Jahangir president, Nagorkanda upzilla at Faridpur district said that reformists must be ousted from the party. “The leaders who played mysterious role after 1/11 and worked as puppets to the caretaker government must be expelled from the party so that they would not be able to damage the party any more,” they said.
