Relatives of a patient attacked North East Medical College Hospital, a private medical institution, in the Sylhet city Monday evening after the patient died allegedly because of wrong treatment.
The patient’s relatives, along with local people, vandalised the windowpanes, furniture and decorations of the hospital in a series of attacks on the hospital between 6:00pm and 8:15pm on Monday, the hospital sources said.
Local sources said Abdur Rakib alias Dhan Miah, 65, suffering from cardiac disease, was admitted to the hospital Friday afternoon.
The on-duty doctor declared him dead at around 5:45pm on Monday when he was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
The patient’s relatives became agitated, claiming the patient died because of wrong treatment.
They alleged that the patient’s condition started deteriorating immediately after he was administered a medicine at around 5:00pm and he later died.
As the death news spread, relatives and neighbours of Dhan Miah
rushed to the hospital compound from his village Tikarpara, some two kilometre off the city’s Chandirpul Point.
They launched several attacks on the hospital until the body was taken out of the hospital at around 8:15pm, eyewitnesses said.
The hospital director, Nazmul Islam, who himself is a physician, denied the allegation of wrong treatment.
‘The patient had severe diabetics along with hear disease and died in a critical condition,’ he added.
Dakkhin Surma police officer-in-charge Ranjan Samantha told New Age that they were present at the spot when the agitated people attacked the hospital.
‘But, we failed to resist the enraged attackers instantly because of our insufficient number,’ the police officer said.
The interns of the hospital were on work abstention on the day after relatives of another patient assaulted one of their fellows.
