The country’s cricket fraternity on Sunday heaved a sigh of relief after paceman Rubel Hossain walked out of jail following his bail granted by metropolitan sessions Judge’s court.
Acting metropolitan sessions judge, Imrul Kayes, granted Rubel bail till the submission of charge sheet in a case filled by film actress Naznin Akter Happy filed under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The bail cleared the way for Rubel to play in the upcoming World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.
‘It’s a big relief for us,’ said chief selector Faruk Ahmed. ‘Every player has a certain role to play in the team and we selected him for it. Some players are good with the new ball while some are deadly in dead overs. Rubel was picked in the team to play his role.
‘If he could not come out of jail it could have upset our plans. In this context getting him back is a big relief. I also felt for him as a fellow cricketer,’ he said.
Another former national captain Akram Khan was also happy to see Rubel walking out of jail.
‘It’s a relief without a doubt,’ said Akram. ‘Rubel is an important cricketer in our national team, so it’s a relief for all of us,’ said Akram, who met the cricketer in jail on Saturday.
Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury said Rubel’s World Cup bid is firmly on the track pending no further legal complication.
‘So far we know he is going to the World Cup,’ said Chowdhury. ‘We have already taken visa for all the players including Rubel. Now if court imposes no further bar on him I don’t see any problem for him for the World Cup.’
