Bengal Art Lounge, located at Gulshan 1, is already amongst one of the most vibrant art galleries in the capital. Beginning in 2011, the gallery has been continuously and with care bringing contemporary local artists’ (a few foreign artists too) works for public viewing and sale. In an ongoing retrospective, the gallery is displaying a selection of works by a number of artists who have been with the gallery from its beginning. It’s not difficult to guess that retrospective of an artist, especially the seasoned ones, offers an overview of the artist’s journey, mutation and achievement. Likewise, retrospective of a gallery also offers the journey, achievement and vibrancy of the gallery.
The present retrospective is nothing less. It offers around fifty-five artworks of a wide variety of genres and mediums by a total of seventeen young and seasoned artists. To note, the retrospective does not cover all the artists who have exhibited their works in the gallery.
However, what the gallery has come up with is quite adequate to attract the art aficionados. From the master artist Qayyum Chowdhury through noted names like Syed Jahangir, Dhali Al Mamoon to Monirul Islam have captured their shares of the display walls along with some commendable aspiring artists.
‘True to the gallery’s endeavour to create connections between new and established forms of artistic expression, this retrospective showcases artworks by young seeds and seasoned masters irrespective of style, genre or school of influence’, says Hadrien Diez, manager of the Bengal Art Lounge.
Among the works there are three untitled ink drawing by Qayuum Chowdhury. Chowdhury’s signature style of drawing women, to be more specific Bangladeshi rural women, only with a few lines and dots can be absorbing for viewers.
Ink drawings by Syed Jahangir are similarly appealing. True to Jahangir’s style, the three drawings on display capture the beauty of the struggling mass of Bangladeshi people.
Beginning on Sepetember 20, the retrospective will end tomorrow at 8pm.
