Speaker hails women’s empowerment
The reunion of the former resident students of Dhaka University’s Shamsunnahar Hall was held on Friday amid festivity on the hall premises.
Jatiya Sangshad speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique attended the occasion as chief guest and special guest respectively at the hall auditorium.
Speaking at the programme, the country’s first female JS speaker in parliament hailed the empowerment and advancement of the country’s womenfolk.
‘The other nations in the world appreciated women empowerment in our country,’ she said, citing examples of women’s success in conquering the Mount Everest, and also in professional sectors such as healthcare, teaching, science, architecture and military.
She said, ‘Bangladesh could be a model in terms of women empowerment through ensuring equal opportunities of higher education for all.’
‘You (women) are enjoying privileges at Dhaka University, so you have responsibility for the women’s development,’ she called upon the hall students.
Recalling the role of women during the country’s liberation war in 1971, Arefin Siddique asked the female students to contribute to resisting the anti-state conspiracy in the country.
Shamsunnahar Hall Alumni Association president Rokeyea Sultana Raka chaired the occasion, also addressed, among others, by hall provost Sajeda Banu and former students of the hall.
Earlier, they observed a one-minute silence to remember the deceased who lost their lives in recent countrywide atrocities during hartal and blockade.
A cultural programme was held later on.
