The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) on Sunday published the reviewed preliminary test results of the 34th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.
The number of successful candidates is 46,250, PSC public relation officer Meer Mosharraf Hossain told reporters. The number is 34,217 more from the previously published result on July 8, when, based on quotas, 12,033 candidates were declared successful. Over 221,575 candidates filled up forms online for the test which was held on May 24 this year.
The results will be available on the commission’s website www.bpsc.gov.bd<http://www.bpsc.gov.bd/>.
The results will not be posted on the commission’s notice board, according to PSC sources.
According to a PSC media statement on Saturday, the results were declared based on the previous system. Preliminary results used to be declared based on numbers. Quota provision was considered in the final results after written and oral examinations. However, this was the first time quota was considered in the preliminary examination. Many meritorious students who took the examinations were left out.Agitated students in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country took to the streets last week after the preliminary results based on quotas were announced. They set up a day-long blockade at Shahbagh last Wednesday.
Faced with growing agitation, the PSC announced a re-evaluation of results on July 10, but the protesters were apparently not pacified.
At least 19 people were injured on July 11 on the Dhaka University campus as protesters clashed with police, demanding scrapping of quota system in government jobs.
Meanwhile, students observed strikes in all educational institutions on Sunday.
Students of Rajshahi University formed a human chain and brought out processions and held a rally by putting up blockades on Rajshahi-Dhaka highway, demanding cancellation of quota system.
They also demanded the release of detained students and vowed to continue their movement unless their demands are met. The road blockades led to huge traffic snarls on the highway.
The strike called by the demonstrators at Shahbagh Merit Evaluation Square was also observed in other universities, including Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, BUET, Bangladesh Agricultural University and SUST.
