After a four-day hunt, the police arrested Debashis Saha Rony, the main accused in the sensational Champa Rani murder case, from the bordering district of Jhenidah on Sunday as he was planning to flee Bangladesh, police said.
The police launched the hunt for him in neighbouring districts as well as in Dhaka on charge of killing Champa Rani Saha at Madhukhali in Faridpur on
October 26 just because she had raised her voice against him for stalking her daughter wherever she went.
Riding a speeding motor bike Rony deliberately knocked down Champa Rani, an employee of the Faridpur Sugar Mills, near her Madhukhali house at Madhukhali.
She died within hours.
Champa Rani was among the many, who gave life in quick succession across Bangladesh in recent days, for showing the courage to raise their voice against stalking young girls wherever they go.
The casualties include young girls – the very target of stalkers, their mothers and even teachers who dared to stand up to the menacing trouble makers.
People held demonstrations across Bangladesh against a spate in the crime against women.
Rony, who had taken refuge in Jhenidah, was trying to flee Bangladesh crossing the international border, people in the neighbourhood informed te police.
A special squad led by Shubrata Kumar Biswas, additional police superintendent of Faridpur and inspector Mohammad Ali nabbed the fugitive from a motor garage near the old bus stand at Arabpur in Jhinaidah.
The police took him to Faridpur.
Ruling Awami League lawmaker from Faridpur Abdur Rahaman, chairman of Sugar and Food Corporation Ranjit Biswas, deputy commissioner of Faridpur Helaluddin Ahmed and police superintendent Awlad Ali Fakir was present t the spot of arrest.
Speaking to reporters Abdur Rahaman, MP, thanked all including the media for helping the arrest of Rony.
The Sugar and Food Corporation chairman said he had asked the Faridpur Sugar Mill authorities to pay all dues of Champa Rani to her family as quick as possible.
He said that he would help her husband and eldest daughter get employments in the mill.
In the morning, Ranjit Bishwas visited her Madhukhali residence and gave a cheque for Tk 10,000 to her husband to pay the SSC examination fee of their two daughters.
The Union of Working Teachers in Faridpur demanded exemplary punishment to stalker Rony.
The teachers raised the demand from a demonstration they held in front of Faridpur Press Club in the morning.
They also demanded of the authorities and the law enforcement agencies to take steps to stop stalking girls and women.
