Rajshahi University students on Sunday staged protest against transport crisis.
Witnesses said, more than hundred students blocked the university’s transport system at 2:00pm as the authorities, without any prior notice, cancelled the scheduled student buses.
Later, the students called off their demonstration as the proctor Professor Tariqul Hasan assured them of taking initiatives to minimise their sufferings.
University’s transport office said almost half of the student buses became worn out.
Each student has to pay Tk 300 every year as transport fees but the university authorities did not pay any heed to it.
Authorities reduced the scheduled buses from three to one and cancelled many bus routes without any prior notice, a student alleged.
Talking to New Age, administrator of RU transport department Professor M Sayeduzzaman said a huge amount of money was required to repair the buses.
‘All our efforts to solve the transport crisis have proved failure due to fund crisis. We are trying to resolve the problem as soon as possible,’ said RU pro vice-chancellor Chowdhury Sarowar Jahan.
