The Rajshahi Railway Police on Friday night took in, and later released, some Rajshahi University students on charges of vandalising the railway station and damaging government property.
The GRP sources said that they took in only three students for questioning.
The police said some university students asked the loco-master and other staff of intercity Kapatakkha Express to stop at the university railway station, but the staff refused as the train was not scheduled for the station.
The train at about 11:00pm stopped at the Rajshahi railway station, five kilometres away form the university railway station.
About 30 students got down from the train and started shouting slogans against the railway authorities.
They staged a rally and while a student was addressing the gathering, some students became violent and vandalised doors, windows and boxes of stationmaster, eyewitnesses said.
On information, the GRP and Boalia police went to the spot and arrested three students — Liad Hasan, Asif Ahmed and Rabiul Islam.
RU proctor Chowdhury Mohammad Zakaria and other assistant proctors, hearing the news, rushed to the station and held a meeting with the GRP.
They convinced the GRP to release the students immediately, confirmed Chow-dhury Mohammad Zakaria.
Rabiul Islam, however, told New Age that the staff of Kapatakkha Express promised them a break at the university railway station, before the students got on the train, but the staff broke the promise when they were asked to.
GRP assistant sub-inspector Belal Hossain said no case was filed against the three whom they took in.
