BKSP’s Rumana Akhter stole the show on the opening day of swimming in the Bangladesh Games by setting two new national records at the National Swimming Complex at Mirpur on Sunday.
Rumana won the 200 metre butterfly and 400 metre individual medley clocking 2:44:15 and 5:55:20 respectively to create storm in the swimming pool announcing her supremacy in the events in which she had also won gold in the last Citycell National Swimming Championships.
The timing was even more significant as it was clocked on the electronic scoreboard after the swimming federation was able to start it that was doubtful before the start of the competition.
The 4ft-10in swimmer from Nikli upazila, Kishoreganj, had grown up seeing the swimmers to be inspired to take up the sport that now has given her nationwide recognition.
Rumana, a Class IX student of BKSP, is going to participate in 12 events and eyeing to grab five medals considering her preparation for the meet that was inaugurated on Saturday after 11 years.
‘I had the confidence of grabbing the gold medals but never did I think that I will create national records because only a few days back I had a serious fever,’ Rumana told reporters at Mirpur after creating the two records.
Rumana, a fatherless girl who is seventh among six brothers and four sisters, was picked by BKSP after her two gold medal winning feats at the junior level meet in 2008 and since then has been toiling hard to prove her potential with an eye to play in the international events.
‘I want to participate in the international events and trying hard to develop myself accordingly,’ said Rumana.
Bangladesh Army’s Jewel Ahmed picked up two golds on the opening day clocking 2:14:09 in 200m butterfly and 4:55:58 in 400m individual medley.
‘I want to excel in all the eight events that I am expected to take part,’ Jewel told reporters.
Bangladesh Navy dominated the 50m freestyle as their members Mahfizur Rahman and Mossammat Nazma Khatun both grabbed gold in their respective men’s and women’s events. Mahfizur broke his previous national record in 50m freestyle clocking 00:24:41 while Nazma clocked 00:30:38.
Naima Akter of BKSP won gold in 50m backstroke clocking 00:35:17 while Rubel Rana of Bangladesh Navy picked up the gold medal in the same event with a timing of 00:29:14.
Bangladesh Navy grabbed three golds, six silvers and two bronzes while BKSP picked up three golds and two bronzes.
Bangladesh Army won two golds, one silver and one bronze and Ansar picked up one silver and three bronze medals.
