Coins of Tk 1 denomination are sold for prices between Tk 5 and Tk 300 as a rumor ran high that an increase in copper prices on the international market might push the value of the copper coins.
Law enforcers said some gangs were spreading rumors that the actual value of the coins would be hundred times higher than their value of Tk 1 as the copper coins were on high demands to local jewellers as well as to Indian market.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion sources said that they had arrested 26 people so far in last three days while selling and buying the coins at different places across the country.
They, however, said that the prices of copper had marked a sharp decline recently on international market after reaching all time high few weeks back.
Bangladesh Bank sources said the
weight of every Tk 1 coin is only 4 gram and the central bank spent Tk 0.78 for manufacturing each coin.
The coin is made of three metals in which 69 per cent is copper.
The police however said that they were
yet to identify the gang spreading rumors
about the price hike of coppers on international markets.
Bangladesh Bank executive director Dasgupta Asim Kumar said that there was no logic to buy this coin at a higher price.
He urged people not to be cheated by buying this coin.
Bangladesh Bank released Tk 1 coin in 1999. So far the BB released 20 crore such coin in the country’s market, BB sources said.
