An Overview Of Dpl Teams (2)
Runners-up Jamal eye super league
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club are perhaps the worst-affected side in the just-concluded inter-club players’ transfer, yet the runners-up team in the last season formed a squad that is capable of giving a fight against any opponents. Jamal were unable to flex their financial muscle like the previous seasons and lost the services of senior campaigners Mushfiqur Rahim, Jahirul Islam, Junaed Siddique, Elias Sunny, Abdur Razzak and Shafiul Islam.
It appeared at times that they will fill the vacuum with some mediocre players before a last-minute activities helped them rope in some experienced players.
Two national pool players Sohag Gazi (his transfer formalities are yet to be completed) and Arafat Sunny were joined by Shahriar Nafees, Amit Majumder, Myshukur Rahman and Dollar Mahmud, among others, to form a side, which, coach Dipu Roy Chowdhury said can fight for a place in the top-six.
‘Let’s get realistic with the squad. We cannot claim to be title aspirants right now,’ Dipu Roy Chowdhury told New Age on Saturday.
‘Our aim is to reach the super league first and only then we can say how far we will go.
‘We were hesitant initially about picking players from the pool as the management had some bitter experiences. But eventually we did not end up making a very ordinary team,’ said Dipu.
Dipu insisted Arafat Sunny, Sohag Gazi and Saju Dutta will form one of the best spin combinations that very few teams can match.
‘It is still very early to say but going by their track record it won’t be an overstatement to claim that other teams will find it difficult to go after our spinners,’ he said.
‘Though our pace attack might not look to be very impressive but I am confident of gelling them as a unit.’
Experienced Dollar Mahmud will be joined by Under-19 left-arm pacers Mehedi Hasan Rana and Emon Ahmed, who spent the last season on the Gazi Tanks bench.
Jamal’s batting will revolve around experienced Shahriar Nafees and Tushar Imran along with Amit Majumder, Myshukur Rahman and Mahmudul Hasan with Sohag and Dollar coming down the order.
The only lacking looks to be their inability of roping a solid middle-order batsman who possesses the ability to finish off the game on his own.
‘That’s right,’ agreed coach Dipu. ‘We don’t have a solid middle-order batsman. We will try to fill the gap with a foreigner,’ said Dipu.
Jamal targetted Mehrab Hossain Jr for the position and almost confirmed his services. But the player accepted money from Partex previously and was forced to join the promotees.
