Rupchan Shundorir Pala, a monodrama that was written and directed by Sayik Siddiquee was staged at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday evening.
Staged by theatre troupe Bangalok, the writer-director Sayik Siddiquee was the sole actor of the monodrama. Siddiquee skillfully used a scarf as a prop to play the role of Rupchan Shundori. The play depicts the tragic story of a rural woman named Rupchan, who falls in love with Sujon, a man from the same village. However, a rogue man from a neighbouring village, who also loves Rupchan, conspires against her and poisons Sujon on the night Rupchan and Sujon get married. Sujon dies and Rupchan is abducted by the antagonist. However, in the last scene of the play, the drama ends with a tragic climax as Rupchan commits suicide.
Siddiquee, the sole actor of the drama, commendably played all different characters of the play.
A group of musicians playing acoustic instruments like dhol, flute, mandira and harmonium accompanied the sole actor by creating beautiful music that complemented the drama that unfolds on stage.
Siddiquee’s acting was gripping and convincing. Siddiquee altered his voice admirably in the play to make the characters he played seem more credible to the audience.
About the play Siddiquee told New Age that the story is not actually a pala gaan, which are traditional musical narratives, rather it is inspired by pala gaan genre that we find in abundance in the Mymensingh region.
‘I am from Kishoregonj and I have seen many traditional pala gaans in that region which inspired me to write Rupchan Sundorir Pala. The story is mine but I have made an attempt to use the traditional pala style in the production. Therefore, I have used the dialect of Kishoregonj in the dialogues of the play,’ informed Siddiquee.
The show on Saturday was the second staging of Rupchan Sundorir Pala. Zia, Raj, Tanvir, Mithun, Bishu, Shubroto, Ashraf, Tanmoy, and others contributed to the play with music.
