Scope for filing income tax returns by individual taxpayers for the current fiscal year ended on Sunday as the National Board of Revenue did not extend the deadline.
Officials of the revenue board said that they faced huge rush of the taxpayers as many people crowded the field-level income tax offices at the last moment for filing their returns.
The taxpayers who have applied for more time will be allowed to submit income tax returns later, they said.
According to an unofficial data, till Sunday around 8.30 lakh taxpayers submitted their income tax returns while another one lakh applied for
more time for returns submission.
The number of taxpayers may increase as many taxpayers submitted their returns even after office time, a high official of the revenue board said.
He said that tax officials received returns as long as taxpayers visited the tax offices even after office hours which end 5:00pm.
In the last fiscal year of 2013-2014, around 10.50 lakh people submitted income tax returns.
The total number of taxpayers who submitted income tax returns this year will be available within a day or two as field offices will send the updated data soon, a high official of the revenue board told New Age.
Officials said that the revenue board would take action against the people who did not submit their returns despite having taxpayer’s identification number.
According to the Income Tax Ordinance-1984, tax officials can impose a penalty of Tk 1,000 at a time and Tk 50 for each day delay for non-submission of returns.
