Government officials and experts in a programme on Wednesday stressed extending safe drinking water and basic sanitation facilities to the rural and lower-income group-inhabited areas to ensure improvement health and hygienic status of the citizens. The programme titled ‘national sanitation month October-2013’ was held at the office of the deputy commissioner of Barisal and organised by the district administration and public health engineering directorate in collaboration under WASH programme of BRAC.
The speakers said achieving the seventh millennium development goals by 2015 would not be possible without ensuring the mass access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation of people.
The gap between knowledge and practice existed among the respondents. A good number of factors such as poverty, lack of awareness, and shortage of water induced households to adopt unsanitary practices, they explained.
However, to transform the knowledge into practice and practice into habit, continuous learning process through more frequent cluster meetings, home visits by programme organisers, and practical demonstration of some practices are imperative, they stressed.
