Today is the first death anniversary of painter Painter Safiuddin Ahmed (1922-2012), one of the pioneers of modern art movement in Bangladesh.
Bengal Foundation has organised a commemoration
programme marking the occasion.
Eminent artists and art critics of the country will hold a discussion on life and works of Safiuddin Ahmed.Safiuddin Ahmed who was born in 1922 in Kolkata of West Bengal, is considered to be the Shilpaguru (maestro of arts & craft). He graduated in fine arts from the Government School of Art in Kolkata in 1942. He later joined the printmaking department of Kolkata Art College as a faculty member.
After the partition of India in 1947, he left Kolkata, along with Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan, Anwarul Haq and Habibur Rahman, to set up Dhaka Art College (now Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University) in Dhaka in 1948. He set up the printmaking department at the institution in the early 1950s.
He went to the United Kingdom in the mid 1950s and completed his diploma with distinction in etching and engraving from the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. His debut solo art exhibition was held at the New Vision Centre Art Gallery in London in 1959.
He established the Gallery Chitrak at his house at Dhanmondi in 2000 and left his house in old town of Dhaka in 2005 to reside in Dhammondi.
