National Athletics gets underway
Sajib Hossain of the BKSP set a national record in long jump clearing 2:11-metre on the first day of the Walton 35th National Athletics at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
Khalilur Rahman, however, stole the limelight as the newcomer clinched the 200 metre sprint title in his very first appearance in the national meet.
Many of the successful athletes termed the weather unsuitable for an athletic meet.
Sajib showed the results of long-term training as he improved on his previous record by 0:1-metre wiping out the old mark of 2:10 in his second attempt. Masud Kaiser Mukul of the BKSP finished second with 1:95 metres and Junaed Bishwas of the army finished third with 1:90 metres.
Khalilur Rahman of the army who is from Patuakhali had a brilliant start and was the clear winner as he left past his opponents halfway in the track.
He paced good speed during the finishing stages to cross the finishing line with 21:90 seconds. Mizanur Rahman of the army was placed the second clocking 22:50 seconds and Jainal Abedin of the BJMC the third clocking 22:70 seconds.
Khalilur said, ‘I failed to participate in the last SA Games and the Indo-Bangladesh Bangla Games due to injury. I have always believed I can be the best and I feel happy to have won the title of the 200 metres in my very first appearance in the national meet.’
He was, however, disappointed to see the timing as it was 21:70 in the last Summer Athletics. ‘I think the timing was influenced by the condition. It was too hot in the morning session,’ said Khalilur, who hoped to continue with the pace in the 100 metre sprint scheduled for today.
Najmunnahar Beauty claimed her sixth consecutive 200 metre national title proving herself inconvincible in the track once again. Beauty timed 24:09 seconds to clinch the title while Shamsunnahar Chumki clocked 25:20 seconds to finish the second and Ishrat Jahan Eva timed 25:90 seconds.
Beauty also said the time of the meet was not appropriate for the national meet and that the organisers should think about the duration as it is customary to hold the meet over three days.
Shumita Rani of the Directorate of Prisons also showed her supremacy in her pet event of 100 metre hurdles with a timing of 14: 10 seconds. Nasima Akhter and Nasrin Begum followed Shumita with timings of 17:90 seconds and 18:10 seconds.
Fouzia Huda Jui won the women’s long jump with a leap of 5:47 metre, Afzal Hossain Surjo of the Bangladesh Air Force clinched the title of 400 metre hurdles timing 53: 01 seconds, Azharul Islsm of the army lifted the crown of shot put with a throw of 10:18 metre and Kamal Hossain of the army threw 58:73 metres to bag the crown of the javelin throw.
