Sakib al Hasan has failed to make justice to his reputation so far in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League being one of the world’s premier all-rounders as his performance has been limited to mediocrity with both bat and ball. Sakib’s Jamaica Tallawahs have been impressive in the tournament as they won six of their 10 matches in the round robin league phase to finish second and qualify for the play-offs.
They will play against table-toppers Amazon Warriors at Saint Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday.
The winners of the match will play in the final on August 7 while the losers will get another chance to secure a place as second finalists.
Sakib played all 10 matches as one of the overseas players of Jamaica and picked up just seven wickets at an average of 24 and economy rate of exactly seven. Only time he picked up more than a wicket in a match was 2-2 in Jamaica’s massive win against St Kitts and Nevis.
This is the second season for Sakib in CPL and his first season with Barbados Trident on 2013 was a memorable one since he shone with the ball, picking up 11 wickets at an average of 12.90. His economy rate in the first season was also just 5.68.
His immaculate figure of 6-6 against Trinidad Red Steel on August 3 2013 is still the best ever bowling figure in the history of CPL and second best in the history of any recognised Twenty20 match. The best ever figure is Arul Suppiah’s 6-5 in England’s Friends Life T20.
Sakib can take some solace as he improved his batting record in this season at CPL after his poor performance with bat in 2013, when he scored just 22 runs in six innings that season with an average of 3.66.
In the current season Sakib has made 139 runs at an average of 27.8 and strike rate of 110.3.
Sakib got his maiden half-century this season, a crucial 54 not out against Guyana Amazon that salvaged his side from a shambolic 2-4, a performance which also earned him man-of-the-match award.
