South Asian Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin is the front-runner to win re-election and stay in the post for the next four years, a source indicated on Sunday.
Salahuddin, who is also the Bangladesh Football Federation president, has said in the past that he wants to hold the SAFF presidency for another term. It appears that he may run unopposed this time around, as no other candidates have yet been appointed by the other SAFF federations.
Indian and Nepalese officials also said that they had no candidates for the presidential election.
Salahuddin declined to comment about his chances on Sunday, ahead of his arrival in Kathmandu today to preside over the executive committee meeting at the SAFF annual conference on Tuesday.
‘I wished to participate in the election for the president post, but it is not the right time to say that I will be re-elected and I will not give you any confirmation after the meeting,’ Salahuddin said over phone on Sunday.
The SAFF president did, however, confirm that the next edition of the SAFF Championship will take place in India.
‘It is confirmed that India will host the next edition of the SAFF Championship in 2015, and the 11th edition will take place in Delhi,’ he said.
A source inside SAFF’s event management company, World Sports Group, said that India would host every alternate championship to increase the interest of sponsors, as per the agreement between SAFF and WSG. Delhi also hosted the last SAFF Championship in 2011.
