The Ministry of Education has included the biography of footballer Kazi Salahuddin and cricketer Sakib al Hasan in ‘English for Today’ textbook, which will be available to the students of the Bangla medium schools next year. The book is also being followed in English medium schools for class VII students who can now learn more about Salahuddin and Sakib’s distinguished career in unit-7 titled ‘Games and Sports’ and lesson-5 named ‘Our Golden Boys and Girls’.
This is the first time the biography of any sports personality of Bangladesh has been included in the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) text book.
Along with Sakib and Salahuddin, an image of Musa Ibrahim, the first Bangladeshi to conquer Mount Everest, was used along with seven other sports personalities in the level seven’s English for Today for the academic year 2013.
Salahuddin was recognised as a local hero in the lesson which goes on to mention –
‘Salahuddin was the most popular football player in our country during the 70s and the mid-80s. He was a dedicated player and one of our most successful and popular footballers in Bangladesh.
‘He was a member of the Swadhin Bangla Football Team during the liberation war. The team raised funds to support our fight for freedom.’
The minister for education, Nurul Islam Nahid, told reporters that they selected Kazi Salahuddin to introduce him to the students.
`The education ministry decided to publish the biography of the nation’s honoured persons. In the games and sports category we selected Kazi Salahuddin,’ said Nahid on Monday.
Salahuddin felt very honoured and thanked the ministry of education.
`It must be a huge honour for everyone to get a place in the academic curriculum. I give my thanks to the ministry of education,’ said Salahuddin.
In the same book there is brief description of Sakib’s successful career. There are also some words about the gold medal winning shooters Sharmin Akter, Sadia Sultana and Tripti Dutta in the 2010 SA Games.
