Jamdani and tant sari for girls and panjabi for boys topped the gift list on the occasion of Valentine’s Day and Pahela Phalgun as sales peaked in shops of greeting cards, gift items, flowers as well as cake and pastry in the capital city.
The shops have been decorated with Cupid dolls and heart-shaped products and they are also selling special gift items to catch the customers, mainly the youngsters.
Local products are now very popular among the people, who are preparing for celebrating Pahela Phalgun, the first day of spring.
This change in taste has been reflected in the boutique shops as girls were preferring saris rather then other dresses and boys were preferring panjabis for Pahela Phalgun that falls today.
Young boys and girls are gathering at greeting cards and gift shops to pick items of their choices for their beloved ones to celebrate St Valentine’s Day that falls on February 14.
Some traders of gift shops like Hallmark, Archie’s Gallery, Rhymes and Reasons, Etc said they were doing a very good business this month as gift items for Valentine’s Day were selling well.
A salesman of Hallmark at Hatirpool said Valentine’s greeting cards were the highest selling item in his outlet for the past few days. Products such as dolls, ornamental watch, candles, chocolates, stone-set imitation jewellery items and heart-shaped items are also selling well, he said.
Salesmen of hawkers market said saris that express the flavour of ‘phalgun’ sold well. The demand for saris painted with yellow and red was high.
Huge rush was also seen at the flower shops at Shahbagh and Kantaban on Friday.
Flower traders are charging high prices for flowers, especially for rose, tuberose, marry-gold, flower bouquet and garland, some buyers at Shahbagh said.
Shatila Sharmin, a student buying flower at Shahbagh, said roses were selling between Tk 10 and Tk 12 each, tuberose between Tk 4 and Tk 6 per stick, which were between Tk 2 and Tk 3 per piece and stick a couple of days ago.
Cake and pastry shops like Hot Cake, Cooper’s are also getting good orders for Valentine’s Day.
Salesmen at Cooper’s of Dhanmondi said they had got a good number of orders for Valentine’s Day. Heart-shaped ready cakes were on high demand on Valentine ’s Day.
Different television channels will telecast special programmes and newspapers and magazines publish supplements to mark Pahela Phalgun and Valentine’s Day.
