Sayeed Iskander, younger brother of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, was laid to final rest at Banani army graveyard in the capital on Wednesday.
Iskander, who was a member of BNP chairperson’s advisory council and former lawmaker, died at a hospital in New York on September 23.
Thousands of leaders and activists of BNP and its front and associate organisations and supporters paid their last respect to late Sayeed Iskander in front of BNP central office at Nayapaltan when his body was taken there at 2:50 pm on Wednesday.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia paid respect to her brother by placing wreath on the coffin in front of BNP central office at about 3pm.
The first namaz-e-janaza for Sayeed Iskander was held at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex at 2pm on Wednesday.
Leaders of various political parties including ruling Awami League, BNP and LDP attended the janaza.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali , ruling party chief whip Abdus Shahid, opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque, LDP president Oli Ahmed MP, MK Anwar MP and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne MP, among others, attended the janaza.
Deputy speaker Shawkat Ali placed wreath on the coffin.
On behalf of opposition leader in parliament Khaleda Zia, BNP standing committee member MK Anwar placed wreath on the coffin of Sayeed Iskander.
A guard of honour was also accorded to pay respect to Sayeed Iskander at the south plaza of the parliament after the first janaza.
The second namaz-e-janaza was held in front of BNP central office at 3:05 pm.
Leaders of BNP and its front and associate organizations who attended the janaza include Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, RA Gani, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Tariqul Islam, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, M Morshed Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Abdus Salam, Ahmed Azam Khan, Abdul Awal Mintu, Mohammad Shajahan, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, AZM Zahid Hossain, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul and joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi placed a party flag of BNP on the coffin of Iskander.
The third and last janaza for Iskander was held at Azad mosque at Gulshan in the city after Asr prayers.
Later his body was taken to Banani army graveyard where Iskander, who was also a retired army officer, was buried at about 5:30 pm.
Sayeed Iskander’s body was flown to Shahjalal International Airport from New York by a regular flight of Emirates Airlines at around 8:40 am on Wednesday.
BNP leaders including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi received the body at the airport.
Then the body was taken to late Iskander’s residence at Baridhara in the city.
Khaleda Zia rushed to the house of late Iskander and broke down in grief seeing the body of her younger brother.
