The elections of Bangladesh Chess Federation will be held today as per schedule after Supreme Court stayed a High Court order that earlier suspended the election for three months. The chamber of judge of Appellate Division Justice Mirza Husain Haider stayed the High Court order following a move by the National Sports Council, paving the way for the elections. The High Court on May 25 stayed the elections for three months and issued a rule asking the authorities why the existing voters list for the elections should not be declared illegal.
A High Court bench comprised of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Khasruzzaman issued the stay order responding to a writ petition filed by Sarwar Hossain of Golden Sporting Club.
The petitioner cited several irregularities in the voters’ list including the omission of nine clubs.
A total of 95 voters will cast their vote in the elections after a separate court on Monday ordered the inclusion of Barisal District Sports Association councilor Mojibur Rahman Hawlader.
‘Hawlerader wanted a further stay over the matter but the court said the elections will go as per schedule,’ NSC law officer Kabirul Islam told New Age. ‘Court, however, ordered his inclusion as councilor and we readily obliged. Now 95 voters will cast their votes instead of 94,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Sammillito Chess Parishad led by general secretary candidate Mokaddes Hossain announced to boycott the elections terming it as farcical.
The much-talked about elections will be held at National Sports Council premises from 10 am to 3 pm.
One full-fledged penal of Samamona Daba Parishad and a partial panel of Sammillito Chess Parishad will compete in the election.
The delegates will exercise their voting rights to elect four vice presidents, one general secretary, two joint secretaries and 16 executive members.
Mahir Ali Khan of Samamona Daba Parishad was elected unopposed.

Chittagong-based organiser Syed Shahabuddin Shamim is vying for general secretary post from this panel.
