At least seven people were killed and 30 others injured in a road accident at Talbaria of Kushtia yesterday.
Of the dead, five were identified as Ahsan Ali, 60, and his younger brother Akhter Ali, 40, of Sherkandi of the district, Salah Uddin Ahmed, 20, and his younger brother Chunu, 18, of Ishwardi, Pabna, and Monjurul Islam, 35, of Bheramara of Kushtia.
The accident occurred around 3:30pm when the driver of a Pabna-bound passenger bus, Sonamoni Paribahan, from Kushtia lost control over the steering, and the bus plunged into a roadside ditch, said police.
Locals, however, said accidents often happen at that place as the road condition is very poor.
Teams of fire brigade and law enforcers of the district conducted the rescue operation and recovered seven bodies.
The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital. Among the injured, five were in a critical condition, doctors said.
The bus driver and helper went into hiding just after the accident, said police.
Rescue teams along with locals were searching for more victims at the spot until filing of this report around 8:40pm.
